FEW CORPORATIONS in the world are as loathed—and as sinister—as agrochemical giant Monsanto. But the threat it poses to people and planet could be reaching new heights, as the World Health Organization has recently upgraded Monsanto's flagship product, Roundup, as carcinogenic to humans. Roundup is the most used weed killer in history.

Roundup is widely used in New Zealand. In January the Green Party said that the Environmental Agency should review the safety of glyphosate, the active ingredient in weedkillers like Roundup. The EPA though claims that the ingredient is safe to use as a weedkiller.

But people have started to fight back against Monsanto. On May 23, 2016, tens of thousands protested against Monsanto across forty countries. With speculation that Monsanto will merge with German chemical and pharmaceutical company Bayer, now it is a critical time to stop the corporate giant.

In this episode of The Empire Files, Abby Martin investigates the devastating history of Monsanto, chronicling its rise to power, the collusion of its crimes by the US government, and highlighting the serious danger it puts us in today.
