A new socialist organisation emerges on the New Zealand political landscape. Organise Aotearoa says it wants to do politics differently.

THERE HAS  long been a growing discontent, especially among young activists, that much of the New Zealand left has relegated any socialist priorities in order to continue to support a politically bankrupt Labour Party.

Now with Labour in power and the New Zealand left looking more and more like a defender of the status quo rather than as a force for progressive change, its not surprising that a new socialist organisation was announced this week. Organise Aotearoa says that representative democracy has failed us.

"We cannot simply rely on politicians in Parliament to do what’s best for us. Time after time, politicians have made promises and failed to deliver. Even worse, most politicians don’t even try."

Spokesperson Emilie Rakete says that the traditional political structures have failed.

"The so-called “Labour” party is sanctioning single mothers on welfare and sending soldiers to terrorise the Middle East. It doesn’t stand with working people. We believe a new world requires a new kind of politics. Organise Aotearoa is a mass movement in which everybody is welcome and anybody can play a part.”

"“Organise Aotearoa aims to take back power for ordinary, working-class people. We live in a wealthy, secure country. Nobody should have to live in mouldy rentals that make them sick. Nobody should have to scrape by on an unlivable minimum wage.”

Over the next several months Organise Aotearoa says it will be holding hui around the country on the key issues affecting New Zealanders, including housing, work, justice, and the environment. “We want to hear from everyday New Zealanders about their struggles and their dreams for more just, fair, and equal society,” says Emilie Rakete.
