But because commercial interests didn't want it, it got rejected by the government. <br /><br />The council plan for example budgeted to build a smaller convention centre, appropiate for a small city like Christchurch. Cost - $150 million. In contrast the government's plan wants to spend nearly $500 million!<br /><br />Similarly the council plan budgeted to spend $200 milllion on a smaller sports stadium. The government's sports stadium was initially costed at another $500 million. But that was three years ago and the costs have risen steeply since then.<br /><br />I agree Brownlee's empire building needs to be stopped in the tracks. Although Steve will probably disagree, this is an opportunity for Labour in an election year to put forward an alternative plan.
