This famous photo shows 17 year old Maria Jinesta, a member of the Juventudes communists (or communist youth), standing on the roof of the Colón hotel in Barcelona on July 21, 1936 - just a few days into the Spanish revolution (1936-39) against Franco’s military coup.
Maria Jinesta died this week in Paris. She was 94.
The photograph was taken by Juan Guzman ( who was born Hans Gutmann in Germany). He was tragically killed by Franco's anti-communist death squads in 1938.
