Emergency accommodation in a cheap motel is costing Work and Income clients over $1300 a week.

WHILE HE'S NO LONGER ON TV3, John Campbell is doing some sterling work for Radio New Zealand, the country's last remaining public broadcaster.

On Checkpoint yesterday Campbell talked with two 'lucky' families who have been provided with emergency housing by Work and Income. This consists of cheap and basic motel accommodation at $190 a night. To add insult to injury, Work and Income expects the money to be paid back by its clients.

This is heartbreaking stuff but this is New Zealand in 2016.

Checkpoint screens on Freeview Channel 50 and is also available as a  live video stream.
