ORGANISE AOTEAROA joined others to hold a #handsoffvenezuela picket at the American consulate in Auckland yesterday.

“The Trump administration is undermining the democratic will of the Venezuelan people by backing Juan Guaidó as President,” said Organise Aotearoa spokesperson Justine Sachs.

On January 23, Guaidó declared himself President of Venezuela following the re-election and inauguration of Nicolás Maduro. The U.S. and its allies swiftly recognised him as President.

“This is a man who never ran for president. The Venezuelan opposition is orchestrating a coup d'état to depose the current elected government,” said Sachs.

“This is simply a U.S. attempt to install an unelected ruler that represents its interests in the region.”

Protesters entered the consulate and read out a prepared statement. Security tried to prevent the protest from being filmed.

While the Government has not recognised the self-proclaimed presidency of Guaido, neither has it condemned the US-backed attempt to topple a democratically-elected president. The Green's have followed the lead of the Government and refrained from making any comment at all.
