Donald Trump has now got the coronavirus that he has claimed is 'totally harmless'.

AT THE first debate on Tuesday night, Donald Trump again mocked Joe Biden for wearing a mask. 'I don't wear masks like him' boasted Trump. 'Every time you see him, he's got a mask'.

When Joe Biden pointed out that health authorities had said mask-wearing between now and January could save an estimated 100,000 lives, Trump falsely interjected 'but they've also said the opposite'.

Three days later Donald Trump and his wife Melania have tested positive for the coronavirus and have gone into quarantine. The couple are reported to be exhibiting 'mild symptoms'.

Trump supporters have been quick to suggest that Trump has been an unfortunate victim of the disease. This is far from the truth. It is the result of his own actions. It is almost the inevitable consequence of many months of Trump disregarding the seriousness of the virus and his shamblic and irresponsible reponse to it. And tens of thousands of people have died because the Trump administration have failed to act as they should have.

Perhaps author and activist Naomi Klein has said it best, putting Trump's diagnosis into a political and social context:

'Trump getting Covid is the epidemiological equivalent of a mass shooting where the shooter opens fire on a crowd and then turns the gun on himself. Not a tragic accident - a crime scene.'
