THE UNITED STATES has been waging an undeclared war against Venezuela. But after four years of sanctions, attempted coups, a failed mercenary incursion, paramilitary attacks and an assassination by drone attempt, the country has survived four years of the Trump administration attempting to overthrow its government in the name of 'democracy'.
Venezuela held legislative elections on December 6 and, as usual, the United States and its media foghorns like CNN have claimed fraud without presenting any evidence. In fact, the Trump administration declared the elections to be fraudulent before they had even been held.
The coalition of parties supporting President Nicolas Maduro won 68 percent of the vote and a supermajority in the National Assembly. All the evidence suggests that the elections were free and fair.
Although the turnout was low - some 32 percent of eligible voters - the participation rate was hampered by a partial opposition boycott of the election. The call to boycott was made by the US backed Juan Guaido - last seem trying to encourage a military coup - but he does not command full support of the opposition. A faction of the opposition participated in the elections and has accepted the results. It has also strongly criticised Guaido's call for a boycott, suggesting he is motivated by American foreign policy interests.
