Away from the maelstrom of parliament, where the forces against him were overwhelming and stressful, Anderton was more relaxed. In his Sydenham electorate office, he was casually dressed, smiling, sipping coffee and rocking back and forward in his chair as he conversed with local journalist Steve Cowan. He was not disheartened by Rogernomics, he told Cowan. 'We've only had it for four years. That's not long at all in historical terms. History was on his side, he said; Rogernomics was an aberration. 'Has the Labour Government been hijacked by monetarists?' Cowan asked. 'That's a little simplistic,' he replied. 'There are parts of Labour policy that are very honourable; the anti-nuclear policy for example.'
