Both National leader Chris Luxon and Labour leader Chris Hipkins have so far refused to call for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza. A new poll suggests that both leaders are not only out of step with the country but out of step with their own supporters.

A NEW POLL suggests that there is widespread support throughout New Zealand for a ceasefire in Gaza.

The poll, conducted by Talbot Mills Research, found that 60 percent of respondents agreed that the ''The New Zealand Government should call for an immediate ceasefire in Israel and Palestine to prevent further civilian deaths". Only 12 percent of those polled said they disagreed with the statement.

The poll also found that supporters of left leaning parties were more likely to support an immediate ceasefire. 76 percent of Green supporters agreed with the statement. 70 percent of Labour voters also expressed their support for an immediate ceasefire.

Well over half of National Party supporters (59 percent) agreed with the statement.

The poll shows that both National leader Chris Luxon and Labour leader Chris Hipkins are out of touch with the mood of the nation and with the majority of their own supporters. Their refusal to call for a ceasefire does not reflect the wishes of the majority of New Zealanders who clearly want an end to the violence that has taken over 11,000 civilian lives, 40 percent of whom have been children.
