This week Christchurch became the first New Zealand city to take action against Israel. The mainstream media, though, decided it wasn't worthy of coverage.

THIS WEEK, the Christchurch City Council voted to sanction Israel and passed a resolution to cease trading with any Israeli businesses involved in illegal settlements in the occupied Palestinian territories. Although the Christchurch City Council currently has no business dealings with any of the companies listed by the United Nations as being active in the illegal settlements, the resolution represents a step forward in recognising and supporting the Palestinian struggle.

Certainly, the vote was deemed important enough by the Zionist-controlled New Zealand Jewish Council to send a representative to the meeting. Spokesperson Ben Kupes urged councillors to reject the motion.

Despite Christchurch being the first city to take action against Israel, it has been ignored by the mainstream media. There has been no coverage in either the commercial or state owned media.

RNZ, in recent years, has positioned itself as an advocate of so-called 'decolonisation'. But its liberal and state approved 'decolonisation' only goes as far as New Zealand's cultural window dressing. It doesn't run as far as providing adequate coverage of the brutal warfare being inflicted by the settler colonial state of Israel against the defenceless indigenous population of Palestine. Instead, RNZ continues to misrepresent and sanitise genocide as 'a war', 'a conflict' or even 'an operation'.

Newstalk ZB also failed to provide any coverage. Even its local Christchurch morning show, with John MacDonald, ignored the meeting. This is not entirely surprisingly though, since many of the station's hosts, including Mike Hosking and Heather du Plessis Allan, have consistently made comments supporting Israel.

Certainly, the New Zealand mainstream media's abysmal coverage of events in the Middle East is a stark reminder of the essential role that the MSM plays in promoting the interests of western imperialism and sanitising its crimes against humanity.

Canterbury University lecturer Josephine Varghese, who spoke at the Christchurch City Council meeting, noted the lack of coverage in the MSM.  She posted to X:

'It's surprising that @rnz_news has not yet covered this story.  Reminds me of the fact that the chapters in history we are proud of came in spite of resistance from NZ's established order, which is more often than not undemocratic, and on the wrong side of history.'
