MOHAMED EL-KURD is a Palestinian writer and poet. He has been the Palestinian correspondent for The Nation since 2021.
His new book is Perfect Victims and the Politics of Appeal.
El-Kurd writes about how the western media provide reports on events in Gaza and the West Bank, but continue to ignore the Palestinians’ political analysis of their own oppression. That would mean having to treat Palestinians not just as victims of 'war' but as a people struggling for their freedom from an occupying power, Israel, representing the interests of western imperialism.
El-Kurd observes of western journalism: 'It never tackles things at the root—it's angry at symptoms but not the disease, which is colonialism and occupation.'
El-Kurd argues that Palestinians exist in a false dichotomy as either victims or terrorists. The motive is to dehumanise
Palestinians. The western media routinely opts to rely on the
expertise of Israeli scholars or international human rights organisations to advocate for the Palestinian cause, rather
than speaking with Palestinian scholars, activists, and
everyday people.
