The Gaza Freedom Flotilla reminds us that real change is always driven by people and not by their so-called political 'representatives.'
ALTHOUGH THE MADLEEN only has a crew of thirteen, it has the support of tens of millions of people around the world who have protested Israel's genocidal war in Gaza.
The Gaza Freedom Flotilla highlights the role that a number of Governments (e.g.the United States and Britain) have played in enabling Israel to commit genocide in Gaza by supplying it with the bombs and missiles. The flotilla also highlights the inactions of other governments who have responded to the slaughter in Gaza by doing next to nothing. That includes the New Zealand Government which, among its ranks, contains several Zionists. Prime Minister Christopher Luxon has allowed New Zealand's foreign policy to be dictated by the United States.
In the context of government complicity in failing to uphold their obligations under international law, the Gaza Freedom Flotilla reminds us that actual change is always driven by the people and not be their so-called political 'representatives'.
One of the activists on board the Madleen is actor Liam Cunningham (Game of Thrones). Shortly before the Madleen set sail for Gaza he wrote:
'We’re sick of words. We’re sick of weasel words. We’re sick of appeasement with people saying ‘Oh, we’re going to think about sanctioning,’ ‘We’re going to stop a trade deal.’ Not enough. The words are not enough. Action is required.
'The siege on Gaza is maintained not just by Israeli firepower, but by global inaction. Despite the risks, we believe that direct, civil resistance still matters – that active solidarity can shift the moral compass of the world. That is why Madleen sails.'
Postscript: While still in international waters, the Israel military have illegally boarded the Madleen and arrested the crew. The Gaza Freedom coalition is calling on the public to pressure their governments to take immediate action to ensure the safety and release of those on board.
