THE ICONIC Greenpeace flagship Rainbow Warrior sailed into Auckland on Monday to mark the 40th anniversary of the bombing of the original Rainbow Warrior on 10 July 1985.

Also to mark the anniversary, the sixth edition of Eyes of Fire: The Last Voyage and Legacy of the Rainbow by journalist David Robie will be launched on July 10.

David Robie was on board the Rainbow Warrior on its last mission to Rongelap Atoll in May 1985 and stayed with the ship until it reached Auckland in July.

Robie’s account of this voyage — of the Marshall Islands community poisoned by nuclear fallout and of the fatal bombing of the Rainbow Warrior by the French Secret Service — remains a definitive work on western treachery in the Pacific. But it also shows the power of good people who were willing to stand up and be counted when others desperately needed their help.

The new edition provides updates on the crew and others involved in the saga, including the French agents that bombed the Rainbow Warrior. As well, Robie has also provided an update on the political fallout and the current position of the Pacific with regard to nuclear testing and the legacy of colonialism.

Eyes of Fire is available through Little Islands Press.

Eyes of Fire will be launched by Greenpeace executive director Russel Norman at the Melville Centre Main Hall Freyberg Place,Tamaki Makaurau Auckland 6pm, 10 July 2025.

Other speakers will include David Robie and founding Rainbow Warrior crew member Hilari Anderson.
