THERE ARE, as they say, lies, damned lies, and statistics. Then there are podcast charts..

ANYONE WHO HAS visited The Daily Blog website in recent times would probably have noticed editor Martyn Bradbury boasting that the podcast he hosts, The Working Group, is New Zealand's number one political podcast. Indeed Bradbury says that 'This year, NZs number 1 political podcast, The Working Group, will submit entries for Best News, Politics Podcast & Current Affairs, Best New Podcast, Best Current Affairs Podcast and the Rova Listeners’ Choice Award!'.

He  has also republished a chart that  does show The Working Group as the number one political podcast in the country. Unfortunately - and crucially - there is no information about the time period this chart covers.

Someone is playing fast and loose with the facts.

The latest Apple podcast chart shows  that The Working Group is actually sitting at sixteenth place on the Apple Podcast Chart for the most popular podcasts in New Zealand. It has dropped six places. The number one New Zealand political podcast is actually Bernard Hickey's When The Facts Change. Sitting at number three is Gone By Lunchtime from Spin Off.

It's also worth noting that The Working Group doesn't feature in the Apple Podcast Chart for the hundred most popular podcasts in New Zealand. When The Facts Change comes in at number twenty-seven, having jumped a big forty-seven places.

POSTSCRIPT.

A new chart shows The Working Group dropping to twenty-ninth. The Daily Blog though has published a chart showing The Working Group at number one. It looks like editor Martyn Bradbury is a fan of 'alternative facts'.

  1. Maybe Bradbury can't believe that people don't want to hear how great Jacinda Ardern is. What a joke.
