OCTOBER 11 was World Homeless Day. It was a day that the Labour Government would have been happy to see go largely unobserved.

As of June this year there were 26,664 people on the New Zealand Housing Register, waiting for a state house. This was an increase of 8.9 percent from June 2021.

In the last quarterly figures before Labour came to power, as of September 30, 2017, there were 5844 applicants on the Housing Register.

In an attempt to 'mop up' the homeless the Labour Government has funnelled more people into what was intended to be a temporary 'solution' to the housing crisis but now seems to have become a permanent feature of the New Zealand landscape - like foodbanks. There are now some 10,000 New Zealanders currently living in emergency housing and 4500 are children. The Human Rights Commission has expressed concern about the conditions that people are living in and says that they may be in breach of basic human rights.

Green Party co-leader Marama Davidson is the Assistant Minister of Housing with responsibility for addressing homelessness. There is little evidence to suggest she's doing anything to address a problem that is only getting worse. She continues to make no public comment.
